Five Young Lives Lost in Tragic M9 Collision as Families and Community Mourn
KILDARE, Ireland — Five young men have died following a devastating collision on the M9 motorway in County Kildare, leaving five families facing an unimaginable loss.
The victims have been identified as Jeremy O’Brien, 18; Alex McCarthy, 17; Joey Carthy, 15; Jack Kennedy, 17; and Kamil Pustkowski, 17. The five were travelling in a BMW that was involved in a horrific collision with a Hyundai on the M9 northbound near Junction 3 at Moone in the early hours of Sunday.
The BMW was reportedly travelling in the wrong direction on the motorway when the collision occurred. All five occupants of the BMW died.
Five Families Left Grieving
The tragedy has devastated families and communities across Kildare, Carlow and beyond. The five victims were sons, brothers, cousins, friends and loved ones whose lives ended at an age when they had so much ahead of them.
Jack Kennedy was from Athy, County Kildare, while Alex McCarthy and his cousin Jeremy O’Brien were from County Carlow. Kamil Pustkowski is understood to have been from Limerick. Joey Carthy was also from Athy and was a member of St. Michael’s Boxing Club.
A death notice for Joey has already been published, expressing the family’s deep grief and remembering him as a beloved son, brother, relative and friend.
Innocent Family Also Caught in Tragedy
The collision also left people travelling in the other vehicle seriously injured.

Four people, including a seven-year-old boy, were taken to hospital following the crash. Their conditions have been described as ranging from serious to critical.
It is understood the family in the Hyundai had been travelling toward Dublin Airport when their journey was suddenly interrupted by the devastating collision.
The tragedy has therefore affected not only the families of the five young men but also another family whose lives were changed in an instant.
There is profound sadness for everyone involved in the crash, including those who were simply travelling along the motorway when the collision occurred.
Investigation Underway
Post-mortem examinations are expected to be carried out in the coming days, while family liaison officers are supporting the relatives of those who died.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision, including reports concerning the BMW and the events leading up to the crash.
According to comments made by Garda Representative Association vice president John Joe O’Connell, the vehicle involved had reportedly been stolen and had previously failed to stop for Gardaí.
O’Connell also raised concerns about the level of pursuit and driver training available to members of An Garda Síochána, calling for a stronger training framework for situations involving non-compliant vehicles.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly acknowledged the difficulties officers face when dealing with vehicles being driven dangerously against the flow of traffic.
He also condemned the reckless use of roads in this manner, noting that in some cases such behaviour is carried out for social-media attention despite the potentially devastating consequences.
A Community in Mourning
The full impact of the tragedy will be felt for years by the families and communities connected to the five young men.
Five lives have been lost, and five families are now preparing to say goodbye to children who should have had decades ahead of them.
For their friends, classmates, teammates and neighbours, memories of the young men will now be intertwined with the heartbreaking circumstances of their deaths.
Jeremy, Alex, Joey, Jack and Kamil were five young people with families who loved them, friends who cared about them and futures that should have continued.
Their deaths have left an enormous void.
At the same time, thoughts remain with the injured family and their loved ones as they face the physical and emotional aftermath of the crash.
There is no winner in a tragedy such as this—only grief, injuries, unanswered questions and families attempting to make sense of an event that has changed their lives forever.
The deepest sympathies of the community are with the families and friends of Jeremy O’Brien, Alex McCarthy, Joey Carthy, Jack Kennedy and Kamil Pustkowski, as well as everyone injured and affected by the devastating M9 collision.
